Cetana’s vision is to offer English language instruction at an affordable cost in a network of English language learning centers throughout Burma. Our emphasis is on ethnic diversity in a country with myriad ethnic groups. Each new center can be established with $60,000 for the first two years. After three years we expect each new learning center to be self-sufficient.

Our new learning centers will build on our success with centers in Kyaing Tong, which is in northeast Shan State and is now self-sufficient. Kyaing Tong is our poster school for success. The school is bursting at the seams. Its director, Cynthia Paul, is spearheading the construction of a new building that will ensure the center’s permanence. Kyaing Tong is the model for Cetana as we move to establish a network throughout Burma.

Cetana is now looking at other areas in Burma where learning centers could benefit young people and the community. Educators and friends of Cetana have suggested a number of potential sites. Currently, we are exploring several locations for Cetana’s expansion.

Mawlamyine, a main trading center and seaport in southeast Burma. It is the capital and largest city in Mon State, with 326,000 residents.

Myeik, in the extreme south on the Andaman Sea, has around 200,000 residents and is a gateway to the 800 offshore islands that attract international tourists. Its diverse population includes Karen, Mon and Moken.

Loikaw, capital of Kayah State, is close to Burma’s largest hydropower plant. Completion of a major pipeline is expected to bring increased prosperity.

We welcome suggestions from community leaders who want to explore the possibility of Cetana opening learning centers in their communities.
