One of the most valuable contributions Cetana has made in Myanmar/Burma is the preparation and free distribution of more than 5,000 tri-lingual illustrated children’s dictionaries. These enticing volumes provide English to Myanmar/Burmese and one of the four major ethnic languages - Karen, Kachin, Shan and Chin. The dictionaries, originally published in 1995, have proved to be in such demand that we are now republishing them in Yangon. In addition, we are publishing a Teacher’s Guide that will help teachers to use the dictionaries in the classroom.
The Kachin tri-lingual dictionary is in demand in the refugee camps in Kachin State. In the US, the dictionaries are purchased by school districts that have substantial Burmese refugee populations.
JOURNAL DONATION PROJECT
Academic and professional journals are distributed in collaboration with The New School in New York. The project supplies scholarly journals for distribution through the Myanmar Library Association to college-level facilities and medical schools, and university libraries that lack computers and continue to rely on printed materials to keep abreast of developments. In 2013, the program was expanded to include ten institutions throughout Myanmar to ensure that scholars outside Yangon have an opportunity to benefit from these up-to-date publications that are normally not available to scholars outside Yangon.
BOOK DONATION PROJECT
Cetana collaborated with the Sabre Foundation, Boston to distribute literature, and English as a second language books to libraries in Myanmar / Burma and preschool and early childhood books to a local NGO whose work is to enhance early childhood educational opportunities. It also has ensured continual additions to the Cetana Learning Center libraries. Cetana has distributed nearly 10,000 books to 75 libraries throughout the country. Specific book titles were requested by participating Burmese organizations.
The OneSchool project at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky regularly conducts a program of book collections to supply the libraries in all of the Learning Centers with academic textbooks and fiction and non-fiction titles.
We welcome the opportunity to form partnerships with other organizations that can supply and provide shipping for text and library books for schools and libraries. Cetana supplies the contacts and expertise for selecting institutions to receive the materials and seeing to their distribution.
